What does Consumers Union do?

Consumers Union provides consumer education and research. We also advocate on behalf of consumers at the state and national level, and in the marketplace. We work on a wide range of issues including health care, financial services, energy, telecom, and product, food and auto safety. We employ a dedicated staff of researchers, lobbyists, grassroots organizers, and outreach specialists who work with our more than 600,000 online activists to change the marketplace in favor of the consumer interest.

CU was founded in 1936 when advertising came of age to provide consumers a reliable source of information to distinguish hype from fact, and good products from bad. Since then we have developed into the most-trusted testing and rating organization in the nation.

We publish Consumer Reports, one of the top 10 circulation magazines in the country, ShopSmart, and two newsletters, Consumer Reports on Health and Consumer Reports Money Adviser, in addition to our online site, ConsumerReports.org. Combined they have 8 million subscribers. To maintain our independence and impartiality, we accept no outside advertising and no free samples, and employ mystery shoppers and technical experts to buy and test the products we evaluate.
